Groups:

Order of the Knights of the Black Tabernacle – Mazarin’s cult

The Musketeers – Usually the ‘m’ is not capitalized. Either way is acceptable so long as it remains consistent through-out the story.

The Cardinal’s Guard – The ‘g’ is acceptable as upper or lower case. Consistency is all that is required




Places:


Café Nouveau - Spelling confirmed from sign in 'Wanted' and 'The Exile.' Nouveau is French for 'new

garrison living area for musketeers

Roget family farm

nothing to add, per se, but the translation of Ramon's surname is slightly off. My Spanish is a bit rusty, I admit, but I do know that the word 'de' means 'of,' and I believe that 'la Cruz' translates to 'the Cross.' Therefore, his family name would mean 'of the Cross.'

Just thought I'd clear that up.

And now I can see that Ramon's name means just that... duh! That's what I get for being part Spanish... I can't say a whole lot more than taco and enchilada.

New thing!* Mazarin is actually spelled different. I was watching an episode of Young Blades (episode 2) and when it shows his office it says "Mazerine's Office/something like that. So I think all along we have been spelling it different.

True, but the series wasn't exactly known for historical accuracy (after all, they tried to pass off an old white guy as Dumas, when the real Dumas was a black man). Historically, the cardinal's name was spelled exactly as we have been spelling it.

Spelling tends to change based on timeframe and country. Even today, modern spellings are different depending on the country you are in.

The Robin Hood fics deal with spelling variation issues too. Gisborne is the spelling in the US. Gisbourne is the spelling in the UK. Marian was Marion, etc. It can give you a headache. So my solution is to go with the flow of gaining the broadest base of readers you are writing for. If I were writing for a classic audience, I'd try to bend my writing for them. Since Young Blades has its own community, go with the frequently used spellings there.

I have the captioning on all but two episodes of Young Blades. While there were some deviations, most are consistent with the ones used here on YB&B.

There's nothing to be sorry about, musketeergurl. It is confusing to run across so many spellings. I only discovered a lot of these differences a couple of years ago when I began writing my Young Blades stories.

another thing about spelling is that most spelling was phonetic people spelled it like they said it. There are actual letters and diaries writter by the historical Charles de Batz Castelmore D'artagnan and his gascon accent was so thick it came out in his writing. Standardized spellings didn't come into vogue till people actually started to write dictionaries of language to weed out dialectical spellings.

The main reason why americans have a unified spelling at all is because of noah webster. Webster published the first dictionary, A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language, in 1806. As an avid patriot he knowingly introduced features to purpousefully separate 'british english' from 'american english' by adopting spellings such as center rather than centre, honor rather than honour, program rather than programme, etc. --behold the power of words, they change the shape of the world--
