Any Rings fans here? I know I've recently become one - though I watched the movie before getting sucked into the books. I've read a little of the Silmarillon and the Hobbit also, and I have to say that Tolkien is a genius!

I'm a LOTR fan also. But I hooked from the movies and I'm now trying to get through the books. I'm reading The Two Towers now. Not sure if I want to go backwards and read The Hobbit after I get through Return of the King. But I definitely recommend the extended versions of the trilogy on DVD.

The Hobbit is a hard one to get through. It's pretty dry until the end.

Simirillian was the worst for me, its like reading a cross between old king james and middle English. i forced myself to do it before the movies came out but it wasn't as much a pleasure as the others.

The Hobbit is a hard one to get through. It's pretty dry until the end. Really? But it's supposed to be a children's book. Me, I loved the chapter "Riddles in the Dark".

The more I learn about European histroy, the more I respect the hugeness of Tolkien's work in LOTR. He incorporated European historical literature, spiritual themes, writing skills and events into his story. Wow, it's mind-boggling what he's done here. He seems to have covered it from every angle.

LOTR fanatic checking in ... read "The Hobbit" in sixth grade and was immediately hooked, then read the entire LOTR trilogy--straight through till the end. Have reread many times since then. Tolkien is a master craftsman and as vigilanti stated, virtually created modern fantasy. A lot of people don't like "The Hobbit" for some reason (my mother included), but I loved it! Enjoyed the movies much more once the extended versions came out--now I can no longer stand to watch the regular versions. Peter Jackson did a good job overall adapting it (I have some minor quibbles with the "Fellowship" and "Return," felt he did his worst in "Two Towers.") However, they are beautiful pieces of artistry in their own right and do great justice to thier origins. The entire saga is an amazing tapestry of history, mythology, language, culture, archetype, adventure, and even faith. (Yeah, Jackson had to expand the romantic quality to satisfy modern audiences, but I can forgive him that).
Yeah LOTR!

A new LOTR book is coming out.
The Children of Hurin is written by J.R.R Tolkien (edited by Christopher Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien's son). This tells the beginning of the fall of the elves, or near the dawn of men. The Simirillian (sp) does touch on this time period, but this book fills it in with the detailed story.
By the way, I learned recently that Tolkien penned the first readable translation of Beowulf as well as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (truly a GREEN story, lol). Amazing man!

I have the 4 book collection..read them. Saw everyone of the movies....
I did like them a lot.
Just felt bad for poor Frodo...feeling at the end he had to leave...
I'm like the poor guy didn't do anything and ended up w/ the task and terrible stress and he don't get anything? No girl? He feel out of place and has to leave...
other than that though...
