Well, I'll be the first to take the "plunge," and repost this musketeer who has been gathering dust in the forgotten recesses of my computer motherboard for a while. I know he'll be glad to finally see the light of all your computer screens. Vespasien (Rye) Durrand Male, 19 Description: tall (6 ft 2), dark curly locks and tanned skin, turquoise eyes, beautiful smile, played by: Hugh Dancy History: Vespasien was born in the city of Lyons to printer Remy Durrand, who married a Roma (Manush), Mirella. His parents died in a fire when he was eight, after which his Roma relatives took him in. He lived with them the next seven years, traveling across Europe and performing. When he was fifteen the caravan was ambushed on the French border and arrested, as Roma are forbidden from entering or living in France. His uncle Kolev persuaded the authorities that Vespasien was actually a Frenchman and secured his release on the promise he would serve in the army. He served in the army for two and a half years. He at first hated having to serve the very men who had destroyed his family, but soon grew to respect his captain, Pascal Simon, who took a fatherly interest in the boy. Captain Simon took him on as his protégé, teaching him swordsmanship and helping him relearn French ways. Seeing the boy’s quickness and skill, Simon arranged for him to go to the musketeer academy in Paris, “a corps anyone can belong to with pride.” In his time with the corps, Vespasien has continually sought his family, only to learn that most were banished or sentenced to the galleys, where most die quickly. He does learn that some of the women and children were sold as slaves in Paris. So at age 18 Vespasien joined the musketeers, serving his country and seeking his family. Personality: Used to communal living, Vespasien made an easy adjustment to Academy life, and is known to be friendly to all. He is marked as a good swordsman, though his style is quite different than most due to his dancing and acrobatic experience. He is a quick study, and can imitate people’s styles, giving him an extra advantage in a fight. He speaks French, Spanish, Italian, and several Germanic dialects. He can read and write in French and Latin. The discrimination against his people and his time in the military have made him very political minded. He avidly keeps up with all the latest edicts and treaties, hoping to one day find a way to end discrimination against his family. While being very outspoken on his views, he is careful to guard his true heritage, knowing he could be killed for it. He frequents cafes and areas where entertainers come in, at times joining them (in cognito, using his Roma name Rye). Besides acrobatics and dancing, he also sings, juggles, and does wonderful impressions. He also has quite a skill with horses, and he will more often than not be in the stables or out riding when he has the chance. His penchant for riding and the outdoors causes him to be a popular patrol swapper. Likes: good food, music, outdoors, horses, children, reading Dislikes: tight enclosed spaces, bigots, prejudice, the Cardinal (for furthering laws of discrimination) and thus his Guard, who often abuse minorities. Because of the Catholic Church’s stance against the Roma, he is wary of churchmen in general, but knows there are both good and bad members of all groups. Most Recently on the UYB RPG forum: Vespasien got into quite a mess when he became mixed up in the problems of Corporal Tremeur “Tre” de Neuville and the Cassidine twins. He also had a near run-in with a private in the Cardinal's Guard, Julien de Girond, while in disguise as the gypsy vagabond Rye. He was last seen at the Cafe, speaking to a mysterious new lady. Recent events have made him even more worried about his identity being discovered and have brought up some unsettling questions about his past.

Katie Reed Name: Katie “Kate” Reed Home Country: England Age: 23-years-old, Oct. 10 Occupation: Governess for the de Autry family. Monsieur Armand de Autry is a widower with two children, Emilie, 12, his daughter and the older of the two, and Henri, 10, his son and two years younger than Emilie. She has worked for the family since she was 18. PB: Julia Stiles Description: Long blonde hair, ends curl slightly, but not excessively. 5’8, brown eyes. Thin and curvy. She usually wears it pulled back, very proper looking but also feminine and beautiful. Dislikes: Being taken for granted, begging for attention, men with bad manners, being treated like she doesn’t matter. Loves: astronomy/the stars; music; art; social gathers when in the mood, and being alone when it suits her; to be appreciated; Emilie and Henri; good wine, and her number one, will earn a kiss if you get her thing, grapes. Parents: Blaine and Kyla Reed History: Born in London, Katie is the daughter of a moderately wealthy, untitled gentleman. Her family moved to Plymouth when she was just a child so that her father could pursue business ventures in shipping. Although Kate loved her father unquestionably, she rarely saw him because he spent so much time working. When she was a little girl, she’d wake up in the middle of the night to still find him working in his study and crawl up into his lap, while he worked. The night was father/daughter time for them both. Sometimes he’d let Kate fall asleep in his lap, others he’d break from his work and take her out on the balcony and just sit with his little girl, watching the stars move across the sky and teaching her about astronomy. Because of this, she views the night as something magical and wondrous, and loves to go out to look at the stars away from the streets of Paris. Her mother and several tutors saw to her education, instructing her in everything a proper lady should know, including French, history, music and art. Her mother was a loving woman, but was always concern about Kate being proper. Kate is somewhat of a dreamer (but also practical, getting that trait from her mother). She’d often catch her mother scolding her father about not filling her head with silly notions and mythology. When Kate was seventeen, her father died. She ended up picking up the pieces because her mother was lost in her own grief. After a year of dealing with her mother, Kate began to feel stifled and lost as well. It was about that time she received a letter from Armand de Autry, an old friend of her fathers he met through his business and well aware of Kate’s problems, since their families had been close for many years. He asked her to come to Paris and work for him as a governess for his two children. His wife had fallen ill and could no longer care for Emilie and Henri. Kate jumped at the chance, much to her mother’s disapproval, and went to Paris. Her mother now lives with her aunt, Elle and her husband, Duncan Callaghan, in London. She writes to her frequently, but rarely receives a response. Personality: Kate can go from being the life of the party in social gathers to a quiet thoughtful person when alone. In the public eye, she is always balanced, smiling and gracious. Only alone, does she shed the mask, crying into her pillow out of frustration with life and the world. She seeks a balance with life and with the things in it. She can be dependent one minute, and seemly independent the next. But she needs the approval of others and longs to be loved and adored. She takes pleasure in both the simple and grand, and has the patience of saint, especially with people she cares for. She has an uncanny knack of rationalizing away people’s faults and only seeing their inner beauty. She hides her displeasure with a ‘that’s okay’ attitude, when behind the mask she’s really anger and flustered about it. Because she is often insecure about things, she has a wicked sense of humor to cover up her own anxiety, which often is enough to bring her out of the doldrums and into a favorable mood again. She loves to laugh, especially since she is certain she takes herself far too serious anyway. She’s socially conscious, and has a humanitarian side and a strong sense of perseverance.

Character: A woman past her prime, yet not yet of great age. Her name is unknown to most since she rarely speaks to anyone. Yet for the compensation of a few francs, she will produce a warm, friendly smile. Of petite build, having dull brown streaked with gray hair of medium length, her eyes glow rose-brown, set in darkened rings about her irises. Being a swarthy-skinned, solicitor of alms who sits at the steps of La Chappelle des Roses by day and disappears by night, little is known of her. Some locals contend that she is the legendary Genevieve, come to watch over her roses. Yet others of less superstitious opinion say the foreign woman has seen a life-time of secrets and will share them with you if you’ll take the time to earn her trust.
Stop, and drop a shiny franc or two in her outstretched hand, and bid her a friendly word. She may say nothing, or perhaps you’ll receive more than you bargained for. She’s grown to be somewhat a part of the local legend, aged with the gothic Chappelle, so it would do you no harm to pay her your courtesy.
The foxes have their holes and the birds have their nests, and our beggar woman does have a place to call home.
