'Sharing' as in making a copy - but not for profit. Ten, even five years ago, the copyright laws didn't cover reproduction of movies, shows etc., that were copied and distributed amongst friends. The hitch was something along the lines that the reproducer could not 'make a profit' on the copies.
Now, the copyright laws say no 'unauthorized' copies - regardless of profit, etc. - only the copyright holder is allowed to reproduce in any form.
If that makes sense. Yes, you can still lend a friend a movie, etc., you just can't 'share' copies.
The 'sharing' response was actually for Sue, Jean, who asked about uploading to 'share' with friends. Uploading copyrighted video, etc., is illegal - period - Just because people still do it, doesn't make it legal.

Whew! I was beginning to wonder, since I have a few movies loaned out right now. No money involved, just out of good will. ;D That reminds me, I want my Kate and Leopold back that I loaned out a bit ago.

Doesn't anyone ever read the copy right at the beginning of movies? Dani Nope. Never. And, as the laws change, and I don't even think they are posted on the YB dvds, I couldn't be sure WHICH laws apply. MY POINT, however, was to see if anyone knew HOW to get permission to share, and if they thought that, since Insight has ceased to produce them, and Sony refuses to even ANSWER regarding such a small production, if they would mind GIVING us permission to share amongst ourselves! Actually, after making my own last post, I wrote to Lilian at Insight, and if they still own the rights (I was under the impression that it had passed to Sony, and...well, sol there! Big company and all) they MIGHT be willing to let us, AT LEAST share at a small price? I'll probably have some sort of answer tomorrow. She usually gets back about 24 hours or so. Or else it'll take six months and a hundred requests...depends on how things are going in that office, I suppose. Anyway...I feel kinda guilty knowing there are so many who can't even GET them! I don't mind doing a little legwork to see if we can't figure out some sort of legal way to share.

It was Insight originally who made everyone their copies at cost, Sue. So, if there are still enough people who didn't get them on the first go-round and still want them, ask Lillian if they would be able to do it again at cost if they aren't willing allow us video share.
Just a thought, Sue.

Oh, I already asked that...they don't have the originals anymore...that's the problem. For some reason, Sony has them...And THEY don't want to do anything with them. Which I reasearched the LAST time this question came up...been feeling kinda selfish having them, and not being able to share.

I heard back from Lilian today, she has forwarded my letter to the appropriate person (I guess their copyright expert) and I have yet to hear from her. If they will do this, I'll figure out how to put them up on mininova and let you guys know how to download. Assuming they'll let me have that permission, of course.

Sue, even if they won't give download rights, they may grant 'air' rights. One of the other forums I frequent actually has a site that shows specific series. The admin there got permission from the companies to make them available to watch, but not download. (Including Chuck, Sarah Conner, Buffy, and several others)
I could always check with him to see how he went about it as well.

The latest...I decided not to post every little detail...thought it would bore everyone!...is that Insight has nothing whatsoever to do with this, any longer, and they sent me to ION, and they have, so far, only sent me the automatic note that says they received the message...it takes them forever to get to their emails in these companies...unlike myself, sitting with the computer on at all times, ready to spam my junkmail instantly! (after all, that's about all I ever receive! )

I wonder if it would be much more beneficial to call them. I could do it. Are you just speaking to ION entertainment now? Or Sony?
