Except that in history, Mazarin died, about four years later, still the Prime Minister...but then, when did actual history stop the writers of this show?

You guys bring up a good point about fanfic writing. I can only tell you what went through my mind while writing Swordplay and SOTC. As much as possible, I wanted to blend with history. Knowing Mazarin remained in office, and that the whole YB fabrication was ... fabricating him as evil, I went with the for-the-good-of-France-we'll-not-destroy-his-office-while-basically-ursurping-his-power approach.

I agree with you potc166, according to the YB universe, Mazarin needed to be out! For the sake of history though, I connected the dots as well as possible. Of course any fictional work has artistic license to do as they will. But that's the approach I took.
